FAQs

1. What size groove dimension do I require for my balance on a timber window?
The following is recommended: D TYPE is 16/17mm, F TYPE is 17mm, K Type is 21.5mm and M TYPE is 26/27mm. These measurements relate to width and depth of groove

2. Are the balance's made of entirely stainless steel and if so what grade?
The spiral rod's are made of 430 stainless steel and the torsion springs are made from BS2803 980NS. The reason behind the two materials is that originally D type standard spiral balances was manufactured, which the metal spiral was clearly visible and exposed.

3. What's the lightest and heaviest size window sash I can use the balance system?
Our balance's realistically cover a minimum weight range of 5 LBS (2.27 KGS) up to a maximum of 100 LBS (45.45 KGS). If you require a weight range out of these parameters please contact Balance UK Ltd.

4. If I have a spiral balance which has aluminium tubing with a coloured plug on the end, do you make an equivalent?
We do manufacture an equivalent balance within our D type range. All we require is the length of the tubing alone in inches, what foot attachment required and also the colour of the plug on the end (White = D2, Blue/Red/Yellow = D4, Black = D6)

5. Can tension be taken off a balance?
Tension can be removed from the standard D type spiral balances. Ideally we recommend for more than one person to complete this job. Simply unhook the balance from the foot attachment on the sash, and then using a wire tool rotate the spiral clockwise removing the tension. Once accomplished correct tension requirement, follow the fitting procedure as per Balance UK Ltd instructions.

With F & K Balances a small amount of tension can be removed within its weight range. Ideally we recommend for more than one person to complete this job. Firstly unscrew restrictor stays and remove from tilt shoe if necessary. Using the F & K installation tool pull the balance out of the tube so that the spring is exposed, then rotate in a clockwise direction 1-2 full turns dependant on requirement. Once accomplished correct tension requirement, follow the fitting procedure as per Balance UK Ltd instructions. (Please note for heavier balances you may need to use a vice instead of the F & K installation tool)
